BHANJANAGAR:The spectacular animal mask dances are prevalent in the district of Ganjam, Orissa, especially in Bhanjanagar sub-division area. Animal mask dances are tiger, goat, bull horse, lion, elephant, deer, peacock, duck, etc. Ram, Laxman, Raja, Rani (one dancer dancing) . All the masks are bigger in size than the head which are  colorful Traditional  Painting, decorative and spectacular . While the heads are made papier-mache, cowdung and wood, the frames are made of canes.



The frames are covered with coats made of thick cloth and profusely decorated with applique work and mirrors. In each of the framed mask two dancers conceal themselves only with their leg visible to give the impression of the quadruple animals .



The dancer dances with various movements the rhythm of  “Changu” played by traditional drummers. Mostly the mask dancers leads religious procession especially Takurani yatra, Ramnabami yatra, Dola yatra procession and other ceremonies.


This dance is wildely appreciated. While performing this kind of dance, the time of staging is kept in mind and guidance of director . Accordingly this organisation has won name and fame by putting up such dancer performance.

01.Mangala ghata NachaThis traditional folk Dance, usually performed in the ‘Chaitra’ Month (Summer season). Specially this dance performed in Orissa ,Ganjam District .The Dancer, in Black sharee and putting on traditional ornaments hold a pot ( Ghata) on his head as the pot is the symbol of Maa Maangala  Goddess the dancer is different Yogo Assanas .The dancer dances his way on the village, street to the rhythm of Changu, Dholo, Mahuri & Jhanja .special indigenous musical instrument “ DHANA KOILA” is played on to the song, praising the goddesses and describing the beauty of  goddesses. At the end of the song, the dance is performed. The organisation has won wide acclaim by putting dance performances at many place

 

02. ANIMAL MASK DANCE

ODISHA: POPULAR MASK DANCE AT BHANJANAGAR IN GANJAM03. TIGER DANCE

This is a popular folk dance but the dance is slowly disappearing. The body of the dancer is completely colored, the head is covered by a leather cap and a leather frame (Galisi) of a tiger’s face with moustach. this dance is completely found south  Orissa in Ganjam District. The ‘tiger’ dancer dances among group of hunters to Rhythm of ‘Changu’ (a percussion instrument ) and trumput  (Bira Turi). This Dance is very difficult to perform, There is more of excellence in the art drawn on the body then the dancer itself. The hunters chant Mantra to control the tiger’s fury. The children are afraid of this kind of dances This dance is performed during the religious festival in Thakurani Yatra and other important festival

04. DANDA NACHA

 Of all the traditional dances, Danda dance in the orissa Ganjam district enjoys people’s unwavering unwavvering faith people witness the different phases of Danda dance lasts for 8 to 10 hours, and consists of number of dance sequences by the different characters.  Our organisation in limited frame of time, presents glimpses of different dance performances of Danda dance.

 

1) Jhuna khela  : Jhuna is Resin and Khela means play with dance format. After the in invocatory place is over Pata dandua (Chief Devotee) and padi dandu enter the around of dancing from both the sides facing each other and holding flaming troches in their hands, A man stands nearby with pot-full of resin powder. The two dancer while dancing to the loud drum beats take hand full of resin powder and through it upward to the flame of the holding torch which raise flashes of glowing red light

 

ODISHA: POPULAR MASK DANCE AT BHANJANAGAR IN GANJAMII ) Parava Dance  : Generally said Parava by the rural people means radiance, the radiance of the deity Kali. As one of the terrific deity Ugra Prava is considered to be an aspect, especially terrific aspect of Pravati or Gouri . It may be that the character represents the deity. A man represented as Kali taking a art of prepared with bamboo sticks in his back, he dance in various step and movement with sixteen varieties of rhythms provided the drummer.

 

III ) Chadaya & chadayani   : This dancer is the interesting item of Danda  Nacha . The Chadaya Is hunter of bird and the Chadayani his wife of Chadaya. The Chadaya wears a colorful “Janghio Pagadi & jhulla Wich is prepared peacock feathers. Holding a noose (Phasa) is his right hand. Mainly the chadaya and Chadayani are devotees of Lord Shiva. The Dance with gong to be pleased to Lord Shiva.

 

IV) shiva parvati dance   : The Chadya want to see ViswRupa of Lord Shiva .After getting high prayer from the Chadaya and Chadayani the Lord Shiva And Mata Parvati came the place with dancing manner, The lord shiva Blessed to Chadaya, Chadayani and provided a live style how to exist in the earth.
